Fence Contractors

Use fences to enhance outdoor space

If new or improved fencing is in your future, considering some of the benefits might provide the incentive you need to get your project from the drawing board and into the yard.

Fences are great home improvement projects. While they psychologically define territory, they also serve to bind the neighborhood together, which provides the sense of neighborliness we crave. Fences indicate pride of ownership and increase our sense of security. Also, recent research conducted at the University of Utah shows that fenced properties are less frequently the target of crime.

That said, the type of fence you choose to build makes a big difference in the message you send to your neighbors and the rest of the world. Fences have been known to offend neighbors, but the following tips may help when planning your fence project:

  • Talk to the neighbors. If you do, they´ll understand your plans, motivations, and as a bonus, they might help pay for half of it. This can be especially important since some fences have a good side and and an "ugly" side. Your neighbors may not want to look at the ugly side, so would welcome an opportunity to share in the fence´s design and expense.
  • Hire a licensed surveyor. You won´t want your neighbor taking down the fence you just paid to put up because it´s on the wrong side of the property line.
  • Material matters. Concrete or block is very private and muffles noise, but can appear intimidating. Wood is versatile and friendlier, but nominally useful where cutting noise is an issue. Vinyl is easy to maintain and reasonably priced, but doesn´t appeal to everyone. Metal, like wrought iron or aluminum, can be aesthetic and secure, but may not eliminate an eyesore if your view is less than desirable. Chain link is practical and utilitarian, but may not make your neighbors happy, especially if used in the front yard.

A fencing contractor can help you make the right choice in material and design that enhances the look of your home, fits in with your neighborhood, and provides you with the security you need.
