Finding a carpenter for your project

Most skilled carpenters have a broader range of knowledge and skill than is usually considered. They may have experience with form building, pre-fab concrete installation, rough framing, interior and exterior finishing, as well as acoustical and drywall work. They may have extensive experience with building walkways, decks, and shed construction. In addition, some carpenters are experienced with pre-fabricated modules and scaffolding. There are dozens of different carpentry specialties so be sure that your carpenter is aware of the various aspects of your project.

Carpenters go through an apprenticeship to attain journeyman status. They may learn not only on-the-job, but also take additional classroom instruction.

Carpenters are not required to be licensed or members of a union. Most are serious about their craft and take the quality of their work seriously, however, to protect yourself, you should ask for several estimates and references. While this is always a good practice with any contractor, it´s particularly important with carpenters. Call the references and make sure that they completed the project to the owner´s satisfaction, on time, and for the agreed upon price.
