Is That Appliance Worth Repairing?

On newer appliances, the determining factor is whether the cost of repair is lower than the cost of replacing the product. Depending on the appliance, fixing something can be much cheaper and environmentally friendlier than just replacing it. Many newer appliances have circuit boards that can be easily replaced. Also, frequent use often causes alignments to shift, so minor adjustments are relatively low cost and easily handled.

Be sure to check your manufacturer´s warranties; many products under warranty will not cost you to have them repaired.

Older "vintage" appliances can also be repaired. Sometimes the cost of the repairs may be fairly steep, but the pleasure of owning older appliances provides collectors with a unique piece with a lot of character. In that case, it´s a matter of preference and availability of parts, but your repair person can advise you better when they see the appliance.

Regardless of age or manufacturer, make sure that frayed cords or exposed components are in good repair. Any appliance that is a potential fire hazard should be repaired or replaced.
